Speech synthesis is a technique where oral communication is duplicated thru a synthesised machine.

A PC that converts text to speech is one sort of speech synthesizer. The earliest kinds of speech synthesis were implemented thru machines engineered to function like the human vocal tract. The talking machine made by Wolfgang von Kempelen in the 1700′s is an example. With this machine speech was produced through a kitchen cry, a bagpipe reed and a clarinet bell.
